Australian pay-TV provider Foxtel is improving the Mobile Foxtel mobile TV service offered by its 50% shareholder Telstra, but the new improved platform will only be available initially to iPhone users - who previously have been offered no Mobile Foxtel service at all.

Telstra said the improved service would offer “enhanced viewing quality” and stereo sound. The service consists of 30 channels streamed to devices on Telstra’s Next G network. While the inprovements will only be available initially to iPhone users, the capability will be rolled out progressively for a range of future handsets over the coming months.

Freddie Jansen Van Nieuwenhuizen, Director, Telstra Product Management, said: "The iPhone is a logical first choice for delivering an improved Mobile TV experience. Generally, iPhone users are already accustomed to consuming a vast array of media on their devices.

“Downloading video or watching streamed content is becoming increasingly popular and according to a recent Sensis report, four in 10 Australians download video or watch streamed video content, up four percentage points in the past year. In addition, the report states more than one in four Australians now use a mobile phone to access the internet.”

Foxtel by Mobile offers five packs: News & Docos; Entertainment; Sport; Music; and Kids. “Channels” available include Sky News and Sky News Business, BBC World News, Discovery, National Geographic, CNN, Fox 8, Sci-Fi, E!, Fox Sports, Eurosport, MTV, Channel [V], Disney Channel, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network.
