Telefónica orders Grass Valley encoders

Spanish telecoms giant Telefónica has ordered the latest Thomson Grass Valley ViBE EM2000 MPEG SD encoders for its IPTV headend.

The ViBE EM2000 MPEG SD encoder is designed to reduce the bandwidth requirements for comparable video quality, lessening the impact on the network infrastructure and making individual streams more robust on longer 'last mile' circuits to individual subscribers. Grass Valley previously provided the complete headend for Telefónica's IPTV service under a turnkey contract in 2006.

The telco reached 609,534 subscribers for its Spanish IPTV service 'Imagenio' by the end of June, adding 4,715 customers in the previous three months and giving a market share of the country's pay-TV market of over 14%.
