PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia confirms 2010 launch
PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) has confirmed that it will be launching IPTV next year, available initially in Jakarta before expanding to five more locations including Surabaya, Medan and Bali by 2011.
“The service will be operational next year, and after two to three years, we aim to have attracted around 40 percent of our 8.7 million fixed-line subscribers,” said Rinaldi Firmansyah, President of the telco, speaking at a news conference on Thursday. The company has reportedly spent IDR 1 trillion (US$ 105mn) on upgrading its infrastructure to support the new service, which will initially offer VOD-only services.
Telkom already offers a pay-TV service called 'Telkomvision' via DTH and cable. Mr. Firmansyah added that it may list subsidiary PT Indonusa, which manages the Telkomvision service, on the Indonesian stock exchange next year, adding: “Currently it has 200,000 customers and it could certainly grow larger.”
