Constantin renames DSF as Sport1

German media group Constantin Medien will rename its sports channel Deutsches SportFernsehen (DSF) as Sport1. The new name is the same as the company’s internet sports portal w/w/w.s//por//t1.d/e.

The strategy of using a single brand reflects the increasing convergence of the online and TV markets, announced Constantin Medien in Munich. With the move, the company hopes that the uniform umbrella brand will contribute to increasing the TV audience market share while at the same time securing the strong position of the sports portal. It is not yet known when the name change will come into effect.

As part of the restructuring, Constantin Medien wants to make the TV programmes more attractive. Through the acquisition of the TV rights for Germany’s first division handball and basketball leagues more than 1,100 hours of live sport will be screened in 2010 – an increase of more than 10% compared with 2009. Additionally, sports news will be expanded and new motoring shows, documentaries and sports entertainment series will be introduced.

Erotic call-TV programmes, currently shown from 11pm, will be removed from the schedule in favour of sports content. The increased expenditure in sports programmes will be offset through cost savings. By shedding 42 job positions and further measures the company expects to save €7 million in 2010.

In addition to DSF and Sport1, Constantin Medien group, in which media entrepreneur Leo Kirch is the largest single shareholder, also owns movie producer Constantin Film, TV production company Plazamedia and sports rights sales agency Team. The company also produces the soccer Bundesliga channel LIGA total! for Deutsche Telekom’s IPTV and mobile TV platforms.
