Discovery Networks Deutschland is considering the launch of a new pay-TV channel in Germany.

“We see enough potential,” managing director Magnus Kastner told industry magazine Horizont. “There is plenty of space and pay-TV is more scalable than free-to-air.” The new channel could be introduced as early as 2010.

The company currently operates pay-TV services Discovery Channel, Animal Planet and Discovery HD in Germany as well as free-to-air channel DMAX. Kastner sees little potential for a further free-to-air offer modelled after DMAX: “A second analogue channel in the pre-digital age would not be exactly risk free.”
