OTE counts the cost in Romania

November 17, 2009

The Romanian incumbent telco Romtelecom has invested nearly €130 million in the first nine months of this year, of which almost a quarter was on DTH reception equipment installed for customers.

The figures, quoted in ZF, were provided by the company’s majority owner, Greece’s OTE.

According to OTE, Romtelecom faces very tough competition and has also felt the impact of the recession in Romania.

It gained almost 200,000 new subscribers to its DTH service Dolce in the first nine months of the year but has been offering reception equipment free of charge.

The company is now placing as much emphasis on retaining existing customers as securing new ones.
