RTL starts DTT package in Halle/Leipzig

German media group Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland launched its DTT package Viseo+ in the Halle and Leipzig region on 7 December.

The bouquet, encrypted in Conax, contains the free-to-air channels RTL, RTL II, VOX and Super RTL as well as pay-TV services RTL Crime and Passion. As the improved compression technology MPEG-4 is used to broadcast the channels, viewers require a new digital receiver available for €99. DTT receivers currently on the market are not suitable for reception of the RTL offer as digital terrestrial television has until now been transmitted in MPEG-2 in Germany.

The free-to-air channels are offered without charge, but can only be received with the smart card which comes with the receiver. The subscription channels can be subscribed to for €2.99 per month with the first year offered free of charge.

Marketing, encryption, smartcard activation and customer administration is handled by Eutelsat subsidiary visAvision, which also operates the German direct-to-cable platform KabelKiosk.

"I'm pleased that the expectations of the public to receive commercial broadcasters via DTT are now being fulfilled in Halle/Leipzig", said Martin Heine, director of local media authority Medienanstalt Sachsen-Anhalt. "And I hope that many viewers will make use of the additional channel offer - even though a new set-top-box will need to be purchased for reception."

Viseo+ has been available in Stuttgart since 15 October.
