Canal+ keeps Premier League rights

Canal+ Group has announced the acquisition of the exclusive French and Polish multi-platform rights to English Premier League football matches over the next three seasons (2010-2013), reportedly for up to €20 million a season.
The rights were won over Orange, with the amount paid by Canal+ variously said to be between €15 million and €20 million a season. That stands against a reported €7 million a season for the previous deal, already spent by Canal+, and a €15 million bid from Orange.
Regarding international soccer championships, Canal+ also owns exclusive rights to Spanish Liga and Italian Serie A. Canal+’s line-up is completed by the French League 1, Champions League and the Europa League.
Orange has been left with Germany’s Bundesliga coverage, and then only for one season. Its attempt to challenge Canal+’s traditional dominance of the premium pay-TV space received a setback early in the year after a court ruled its Orange sports and movies channels must be offered to other distributors such as Canalsatellite and cable operators.
