Reduced ad-tax for private channels adopted

Private channels’ advertising tax will be reduced for 2009, French Deputies decided late last week. Instead of a tax of 3% of broadcasters’ advertising revenues, private groups like TF1, M6 and Canal+ will be taxed 0.5% if ad revenues have fallen by 5% or more during 2009 and 1% if they have decreased by less than 5 %.
Voted through by right-wing Deputies, the decision still must be adopted by the Senate. But left-wing Deputies have already denounced the decision as a “Christmas gift” for private broadcasters.
The ad-revenue tax on private channels was voted into law earlier this year to raise money to compensate public service broadcasters for the PSB partial advertising ban.
