MUMBAI: The Government claimed that Colors TV channel had started telecasting "in a more pointed manner" short messages to convey the evils of child marriage in the promos of the series Balika Vadhu.
Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting CM Jatua said in Parliament that the channel had taken a "proactive stand" after the Ministry had examined the issue and found that the serial "does not air to glorify the issue of child marriage" and was in fact conceptualized to highlight the evils of child marriages.
The Minister said the government was not aware of any study relating to serials glorifying outlawed customs and practices, but had taken note of the Balika Vadhu case on a complaint.
While there is no pre-censorship of the programmes on TV, they are all expected to adhere to the Programme and Advertising Codes and the Cable TV Networks (Regulation) Act 1995.
