canalFrance’s Competition Authority has called for a law to be passed to regulate Canal+’s dominant position in the pay-TV market.

President of the Authority, Bruno Lasserre, said at a press conference that “a law was necessary even though French government was opposed to this idea.”

But he admitted that Canal+’s dominant postion was counterbalanced by the 59 commitments agreed on by the channel at the time of the merger with satellite operator TPS. This included making some premium channels available until 2013 to third party distributors. The Competition Authority recommends extending this time period.
