Project Canvas, the consortium aiming to bring on-demand TV to mass non-subscription audiences in the UK, has revealed its official brand: YouView.

YouView will be lead by former BBC IPTV head Richard Halton and will have at its side official partners in the form of the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Five, Cisco, Humax, Technicolor, Talk Talk and Arqiva.

On the eve of the IBC show, more than forty organisations expressed their support for Project Canvas proposals to bring consumers standards based, internet-connected TV devices that will enable mass UK audiences to combine DTT, Satellite and on-demand services without the need to pay a subscription. The consortium represents a range of consumer device manufacturers including set-top-boxes, internet-enabled TVs and recorders.

“The response from industry has been phenomenal, and we’re really excited by the strong desire to work with [us] to bring internet-enabled set-top-boxes and TVs into people’s homes next year, said Halton. “For us, this is a great endorsement of our open approach to working with industry partners.”

Despite the rebranding YouView was less forthcoming about when it may launch and stated on its web site that ‘all being well’ the first half of 2011 was the likeliest time.
