The Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in conjunction with Suncast Communications has begun its operation in the United States with five television channels launched in Washington DC on Friday, as part of its efforts to complete its expansion programmes both within and outside Nigeria before the conduct of 2011 general elections in Nigeria.
The five television channels launched at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington DC are NTA News 24, NTA 2 Lagos, NTA Sports, NTA Entertainment and NTA Knowledge channels, and they will be managed by Suncast, a United States based communication operator.
Speaking at the event on Friday, Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States, Prof Ibidapo Adebowale Adefuye, said that the official launching will enable Nigerians in the diaspora as well as the international community to have uninterrupted television broadcasting from Nigeria at all times. Ambassador Adefuye said further that the initiative is one of the series of events by the television station to expand its frontiers globally, adding that it will also ensure that the variety of programmes gets to every home especially Africans.
The former deputy high commissioner of Nigeria to the United Kingdom also hinted that the launching of the five channels was in fulfillment of its corporate social responsibility and also complementing President Jonathan’s irrevocable commitment to conducting free and fair elections in 2011. “President Goodluck Jonathan wants the election to be open to everybody especially those in the diaspora. He wants to make the elections credible, he also wants the international observers to have free access to everything going on during the general election, hence, he directed that these five channels be opened in the United States. We are going to have people watching us around the world as the whole processes of the elections are going on”, Mr Adefuye said.
