Ivory Coast blocks foreign news channels in wake of election

by Andy Sennitt.

The Ivory Coast is in turmoil after supporters of President Gbagbo refused to accept the result of the presidential election that saw him beaten by opposition leader Alassane Ouattara. Mr Gbagbo has been officially declared the winner by the electoral commission, despite provisional results showing him to have received just 45.9% of the votes compared to 54.1% for Mr Ouattara.

Since yesterday evening, foreign news channels operating in the country such as France 24, CNN and Radio France International (RFI) went off the air. Authorities ordered the immediate suspension of all foreign news channels carried by the Canal+ Horizon TV network, which a statement said was designed to “keep the peace.”
