RNW’s Rob Kievit writes: Dutch Media Minister Marja van Bijsterveld has written to the Lower House that Radio Netherlands Worldwide’s funding will be moved to the Foreign Affairs budget in 2013. In the coming years the Foreign Ministry will decide what the core tasks of RNW are, and what level of funding is needed for these. The recently appointed rightwing government decided that the move to the Foreign Ministry would be made during the current cabinet, but the exact date was not known until now.

Other measures mentioned by Minister Van Bijsterveld include a programme of mergers to reduce the number of public broadcasting companies from 21 to 8. A proposal to dismantle the public media’s orchestra centre, MCO, has been withdrawn. But the orchestras are still facing drastic cuts as MCO’s subsidy will be more than halved.

The 2011 media budget will be discussed in the Lower House on 13 December.
