Chinese news agency Xinhua has spun off its mobile TV activities into a separate division, and is planning a programme of expansion, including overseas.

Xinhua Mobile TV started offering a single service in China a little over a year ago, in September 2009. Now, the company is planning mobile TV channels in other languages, including English, Japanese, Korean and French and is hoping to strike deals with mobile operators abroad.

Two of China’s major mobile operators, China Mobile and China Telecom, offer the news agency’s service in China, with versions also available for the iPad and iPhone platforms.

Chairman of Xinhua, Wu Jincai, said the company produced an average of 800 minutes of news content in both Chinese and English every day.
