Intel introduced the Intel CE 2110 Media Processor, an integrated media SoC for the next generation consumer electronics devices, such as digital networked media players and set top boxes. Microsoft expect its new media processor will bring consumers advanced home entertainment and information services.

The Intel CE 2110 Media Processor combines a 1 GHz Intel XScale processing core with powerful audio-video processing, graphics and I/O components. Single chip solution is important as consumer electronics manufacturers need to accelerate development/production process.
The MPEG-2 and H.264 video codecs maximizes system-level performance by enabling the Intel XScale processor core to be used exclusively for applications. In addition to the Intel XScale processor core, this highly integrated consumer electronics platform building block includes an Intel Micro Signal Architecture DSP core for audio codecs, a 2D/3D graphics accelerator, hardware accelerators for encryption and decryption, comprehensive peripheral interfaces, analog and digital input/output, and a transport interface for ATSC/DVB input.

Key features and specs of Intel CE2110 Media Processor:

    • Up to 1GHz XScale processor core
    • Hardware video decoder for H.264 and HD MPEG-2
    • Soft-decode on Intel XScale processor for other codecs
    • 2D/3D graphics accelerator
    • Intel Micro Signal Architecture DSP core for audio codecs
    • Hardware accelerators for encryption/decryption
      • DVB-CSA, DES, 3DES, AES

    • Memory support
      • Flash support on the 8/16-bit expansion bus interface
      • Two 32-bit 500 MT/s DDR2 SDRAM interfaces (configurations from 64 MB to 512 MB)

    • Video/audio outputs
      • Analog component, or S-Video & composite (supports closed captioning, Macrovision* 7.1 & CGMS-A copy protection)
      • Interface for external HDMI transmitter with HDCP
      • 2-channel, 6-channel I2S out
      • S/PDIF out

    • Video/audio inputs
      • Transport stream interface for ATSC/DVB tuner inputs
      • BT.656 input (NTSC/PAL analog video in) + I2S (analog audio in)

    • On-chip interface peripherals
      • – 11 dedicated GPIO (plus 82 MUXed GPIO)
      • – Two integrated UARTs
      • – Watchdog and system timers
      • – 3 I2C interfaces for system control
      • – One SPI high-speed serial bus
      • – Two integrated ISO7816 interfaces for smart cards

    • Standard system interfaces
      • 33MHz 32-bit PCI 2.2 host with support for 4 external masters
      • 2 serial ATA interfaces for HDD or DVD drives
      • USB 2.0 host

    • 35mm Pb-free FC-BGA package

To bring advanced multimedia services to consumers, Intel works with consumer electronics companies, system integrators and multimedia service providers, such as:

    • ASUS has a set top box with the new Intel SoC media processor today.
    • Digeo plans to deliver new Moxi Multi-Room HD digital media recorders.
    • OKI and ZTE will build set top boxes based on the Intel CE 2110 Media Processor.
    • System integrator Hwacom plans to provide application layers for IPTV services using the new Intel media processing platform.
    • RADVISION will deliver VoIP and video conferencing capabilities.
    • Chunghwa Telecom, one of Taiwan telecom service providers has adopted the new Intel CE 2110 Media Processor for its Multimedia on Demand service. Chunghwa will expand its HD video content, e-banking, e-learning services.
    • Amino Communications will provide the IntAct IPTV client software stack.
    • Verimatrix will deliver content protection software based on the new media processing platform.

CE 2110 Media Processor Development Kit
Intel offers System Development Kit (SDK) for the CE 2110 Media Processor, including a platform support package for the Linux, media drivers, platform drivers, display drivers. The SDK is based on an open multi-media development framework. This SDK provides an open-source framework for application development that enables rapid porting of selected software solutions to the baseline platform. The SDK includes:

    • Integrated Device Library, a low level Application Programming Interface for controlling integrated devices
    • External Device Library, a Low level Application Programming Interface for controlling external devices
    • Streaming Media Drivers, an External software interface & high-level Application Programming Interface for media-processing tasks that can be performed on the platform
    • Graphics Device Library, an Application Programming Interface for applications to control the graphics

    MAX3580 DVB-T Reference Design

The MAX3580 DVB-T reference design meets NorDig and MBRAI requirements. This NIM design includes the MAX3580 direct-conversion tuner and a COFDM DVB-T demodulator. A discrete, active loop-through with low power consumption and low cost is included.

Figure 1. The reference design for the NorDig and MBRAI DVB-T tuner features the MAX3580.

    Figure 2. System block diagram.

    Lab Measurements

Figure 3. Data shows that there is at least 2dB margin to NorDig 1.0.2 in the VHF band.

Figure 4. Here the data shows that there is 3.5dB to about 5dB margin to NorDig 1.0.2 in the UHF band.
