WHUS, the nonprofit community radio station serving the University of Connecticut and surrounding region, and Middletown-based WESU are considering running the Middle East-based Al Jazeera’s English-language daily hour-long broadcast in 2011.
The UConn station’s board of directors is expected to vote on the idea at its meeting early next month. “This is something we’ve been talking about for years, so I don’t anticipate any opposition [from members of the board],” says WHUS General Manager John Murphy.
WESU’s general manager, Benjamin Michael, says there is “pretty much support across the board” at his station for running the Al Jazeera broadcasts but that his station’s board also needs to take formal action. WESU board is made up of volunteers that include Wesleyan University students and members of the community.
