South Korean telecom company KT Corp has successfully launched and orbited a new broadcast satellite to broadcast high definition (HD) and 3D programmes into Korea. The broadcast satellite, named “Olleh-1″ after the company’s flagship brand, was sent into orbit on Thursday from French Guiana aboard a rocket made by France-based Arianspace SA, KT said in a statement.

The company plans to begin an enhanced satellite broadcasting service in February with the Olleh-1, which will take over missions from the Mugunghwa-3 satellite launched in 1999.

KT says it is eying a joint satellite launch in 2013 with overseas satellite operators to expand its service into the Middle East and Africa. The company operates four broadcast and communication satellites with the latest launch.
