Orange under pressure to reconsider football move
11 Jan 11 -
France’s sports minister has reportedly asked Orange CEO Stéphane Richard to reconsider his decision to sell the Orange Sports channels and withdraw from bidding for the next round of French Ligue 1 football rights.
According to a report in Le Parisien newspaper, Chantal Jouanno recently met Richard and expressed the government’s concerns about the possible impact of the loss of revenue to leading French clubs if Orange were to withdraw from the market.
Although the French football association, the LFP, plans to launch its own channel, CFoot, using capacity on the country’s digital-terrestrial platform, it is feared that Orange’s decision not to bid for the next round of rights will leave pay TV leader Canal Plus as the only real contender for the rights.
