The New York Times has published a profile of Belsat TV, the satellite station that has been broadcasting into Belarus from Poland since December 2007.
The article notes that the station is “using 120 freelancers inside Belarus who each day send news to Warsaw by phone or the Internet. Many of them have been detained, arrested or fined.”
The newspaper says that “These days, the Polish government is one of the most active supporters of the democratic opposition in Belarus. Poland’s Foreign Ministry provides an annual stipend to Belsat TV of nearly $6 million, the bulk of its annual budget of about $9 million. The Swedish government is providing a grant of about $3 million over a three-year period that ends in 2013. ”
