German media company ProSiebenSat.1 will close down its quiz channel 9Live on 31 May 2001.

Citing reasons for the closure, the company revealed that the channel’s turnover, principally from call-TV shows, had dropped considerably of late.

At the end of May, the production of live call-TV shows will be terminated. From then on, the channel will show fictional programmes such as movies and series for the time being.

The background for the decreasing call-TV revenues are the stronger restrictions for telephone and SMS quiz shows which the media authorities have set with their new guidelines for call-TV competitions.

The watchdogs already imposed several high penalty fines against 9Live in the past months for infringing the guidelines.
