China Telecom is deploying the Cisco Aggregation Services Router 9000 Series (ASR 9000) in China to support its "triple-play" strategy and meet the increasing demand of users for new services.
Initially, the ASR 9000s will be deployed in China's developed coastal regions, including Shanghai, Fujian and Guangdong, to provide new converged services including IPTV and VPN for users.
The ASR 9000 has a number of capabilities that optimise the platform for video delivery, including integrated content caching and in-line video performance monitoring. It also uses Cisco's IOS XR modular software operating system, which is expected to simplify China Telecom's network operations.
Cisco released its annual Visual Networking Index Forecast earlier this week, which predicts that global internet traffic will quadruple by 2015, with online video the key driver.
