French international news channel France 24 has filed charges for « identity theft and impersonation » following an interview with a person claiming to be Syria’s ambassador in France.

Broadcast live in both French and English, Lamia Chakkour’ s interview had led to the live announcement that she was resigning from her post with immediate effect.

France 24’ invitation was made via the Syrian embassy. But in subsequent media interviews, Chakkour denied having resigned and alleged she had been « impersonated » but declined to speak to France 24.

France 24 has commissioned voice comparison analyses, which concluded that the voice on Tuesday night interview was different from the voice which later issued the denial broadcast on the French channel, BFM TV.

The channel’s complaint has been charged to the Paris Public Prosecutor.
