German public broadcaster ZDF will change the name of its digital channel ZDFinfokanal into ZDFinfo in late summer.

At the same time, the channel will get a new design and programme schedule, ZDF general director Markus Schächter announced at a board meeting on 17 June 2011.

The main focus points will be currents news, history, documentaries, coverage of European events and advisory programmes. ZDFinfo will continue to repeat news programmes, reports, documentaries and other information- and service-based shows from ZDF's main channel.

In future, viewers will be more strongly involved into the programmes by enabling them, for example, to participate in political debate shows via internet.

A new cross-media format is being developed under the working title "My Info": The plan is to create new programmes for ZDFinfo out of the most accessed and most highly rated videos from ZDF's online catch-up TV service ZDFmediathek, thereby turning the user into a programme director.
