As it maintains its momentum in rolling out new broadcast services, in particular web TV and other over the top (OTT) content with traditional linear TV, Telenor Satellite Broadcasting (TSB) has signed a contract with Space Systems/ Loral (SSL) for the construction and delivery of its new geosynchronous satellite.

The new THOR 7 craft, based on SS/L’s 1300 series platform and fitted with two payloads, will be positioned at 1° West and is designed to provide necessary satellite capacity via 11 active Ku band transponders for broadcasting services in Central and Eastern Europe and additional capacity for communication services for maritime use.

The spacecraft has a 28 month production schedule and will be built at the US manufacturing facilities of Space Systems/Loral who will be also be responsible for its design and test activities. THOR 7 is expected to commence commercial service by Q1 of 2014. Telenor is currently concluding negotiations with its preferred satellite launch provider who will be revealed at the end of June 2011.

“Telenor Satellite Broadcasting selected Space Systems/Loral based predominantly upon their most favourable all round design which will deliver optimised European coverage and high powered capacity,” explained Cato Halsaa, Vice President and CEO of Telenor Satellite Broadcasting.
