Reports are circulating in Germany that RTL will close down its high power mediumwave transmitter (1440 kHz) in Marnach, Luxembourg, when its current licence expires in October. This follows a story in the newspaper Luxemburger Wort. However, something seems to have been lost in translation. I checked with Media Network contributor Benny Brown, who works at RTL. He tells me that “This is a citizens’ initiative, and no definite answers have been given for anything.”

The story apparently arose after some cows escaped through a metal fence that had been weakened by a combination of fog, moisture and RF from the mediumwave transmitter. Benny adds that “Marnach itself is a sleepy village in the far north of the country, where escaped cows form the bulk of the news.”
