    Bruce - closing in.
    SUNDERLAND CLOSE IN ON PAIR

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce was on Wednesday hoping to stage a double transfer coup as he closed in on striker Connor Wickham and midfielder Craig Gardner.
Press Association Sport understands 18-year-old Ipswich frontman Wickham is due to undergo a medical within the next 24 hours after the Black Cats tabled a formal bid of more than 8million.
In addition, they are expected to hold talks with 24-year-old Birmingham midfielder Gardner as they try to push home their interest in him.
However, Bruce and chairman Niall Quinn could face a race against time to persuade Wickham that his future lies at the Stadium of Light before his other suitors can stake their own claims.
The player has been heavily linked with Liverpool and is understood to favour a switch to Anfield, while Arsenal and Tottenham also reportedly have an interest in him.
Sunderland will hope they have stolen a march on their potential competitors by getting their blow in first, although that could yet have the effect of prompting a response from other parties.
Bruce has moved for the teenager in an effort to rebuild an attacking unit which has been torn apart by departures and injury.
The Black Cats started the last campaign with Darren Bent, Asamoah Gyan, Danny Welbeck and Fraizer Campbell at their disposal.
However, Bent's January moved to Aston Villa, Welbeck's return to Manchester United after his loan spell and another knee injury for Campbell has severely depleted their resources.
Bruce is desperate to build upon last season's top-10 Barclays Premier League finish, which was achieved despite an injury crisis which prompted a post-Christmas slump.
England Under-21 international Wickham certainly fits the bill as Sunderland attempt to build a squad of young, talented players, although he remains relatively inexperienced.
He has 72 senior appearances for Town to his name, 35 of them as a substitute, and he scored nine times in last season's npower Championship.
Meanwhile, Bruce will hope to sell his vision for the future to Gardner, who would effectively plug the gap left by Jordan Henderson when he made his big-money switch to Liverpool earlier this month.
It emerged at the weekend that the club's pursuit of the boyhood City fan was at an advanced stage, and Sunderland are keen to strike a deal as soon as possible.

    McLeish - eyeing Friedel replacement.
    McLEISH EYES GIVEN SWOOP

New Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish is stepping up his attempts to sign a proven goalkeeper with Shay Given amongst the targets on his radar, Press Association Sport understands.
The Manchester City player spent last season as number two to Joe Hart, who reaped the benefits of a season under McLeish when on loan at Birmingham.
Now McLeish is considering whether to return to Eastlands for 35-year-old Given, who moved from Newcastle two years ago and still has two years left on his current contract.
Villa need a new number one after Brad Friedel opted to leave on a free transfer at the end of last season to move to Tottenham, but the Midlands club will make no official comment on whether McLeish wants to sign Given.
The Republic of Ireland international's only appearances for City last season were in the Europa League, but at Villa he would be virtually guaranteed first-team football ahead of back-up goalkeepers Brad Guzan and Andy Marshall.
McLeish also has to decide whether to go back to his former club and try and sign Ben Foster, who he brought to St. Andrew's from Manchester United in a 6 million move last summer.
Foster had an oustanding season despite Blues being relegated from the Barclays Premier League.

Gera - in negotiations with the Baggies.
    BAGGIES WAITING ON GERA NEWS

West Brom expect to find out in the next few days whether midfielder Zoltan Gera will be rejoining them.
Gera is a free agent after his contract with Fulham finished at the end of last season.
He spent four years at the Hawthorns before making the move to Craven Cottage in the summer of 2008.
Albion have held talks with the Hungarian international but there is also interest from an unnamed Serie A club.
Gera's agent, Vladan Filipovic, said: "The negotiations are in a period where we can agree anytime (with a club).
"It can happen that Gera's future will be decided next day - or we could close the negotiations next week.
"But it's not a secret that we are at the finish."
Current Albion head coach, Roy Hodgson, signed Gera when in charge of Fulham.
He was a favourite with Baggies fans and has received a warm welcome whenever returning with Fulham.
West Brom are still waiting to see whether Lazio will follow up their interest in defender Gabriel Tamas with a firm offer.

    Rangel - new three-year deal.
    RANGEL AGREES NEW SWANS DEAL

Defender Angel Rangel has committed his future to Swansea after agreeing a new three-year deal.
The 28-year-old Spaniard was out of contract at the end of the month and there had been fears the full-back would follow Darren Pratley and Dorus de Vries out of the south Wales club on a free transfer.
But Swans chairman Huw Jenkins told the club website: "We are very happy to secure Angel's future for the next three years.
"He has played a big role in the club's success since he arrived here, and we were very keen for him to be part of our plans going into the Premier League.
"Over the last few years there has been interest from Premier League clubs in Angel, but he is very pleased to have achieved his dream of reaching the Premier League with the club he left his native Spain for."

    James - eyeing promotion push.
    JAMES SIGNS NEW CITY DEAL

Bristol City have confirmed veteran goalkeeper David James has signed a new one-year contract to stay at Ashton Gate.
James joined the Robins last summer from Portsmouth and was entitled to a 12-month extension after playing in all but two of the club's games last season.
The 40-year-old is looking forward to staying with Keith Millen's side and feels the club can push for promotion to the Premier League next season.
"Despite all the adversities last season, I think on a number of occasions we showed our capabilities," James told the club's official website.
"Yes, there were some inconsistencies that let us down. Too often we allowed teams to beat us, but when we got it right we could win games against whoever we faced.
"I'm confident we can do good things this season, as I've been assuring City fans whenever I bump into them around the world."
Robins boss Millen, who is also hoping to persuade fellow keeper Stephen Henderson to sign a new deal, is happy James has pledged to stay at the club.
Millen said: "David proved his fitness last year being available for every game and he clearly sees us going in the right direction, pushing for promotion in the forthcoming season. That's why he's decided to sign the contract extension."

Lennon - no plans to sell Brown.
LENNON KEEN TO KEEP HOLD OF BROWN

Celtic manager Neil Lennon will reject any approaches for captain Scott Brown as he bids to tie the midfielder to a new contract.
The Scotland international is out of contract at Parkhead next summer and has attracted interest due to his strong displays last season.
Lennon said: "We opened preliminary talks with Scott at the end of last season.
"He's on record as saying he wants to stay at Celtic and that is something I'm very pleased about.
"I'm hoping to get him tied down.
"I wouldn't be surprised if there's interest as he was magnificent last season. "I'd be unwilling to sell him and I'd rebuff any offers."

    Hulse - wants to stay.
HULSE KEEN TO STAR WITH QPR

QPR striker Rob Hulse has no intention of leaving Loftus Road and wants to establish himself as a force in the Premier League, according to the player's agent.
The 31-year-old linked up with former manager Neil Warnock last summer but failed to establish himself in west London as the Rs won the npower Championship title.
Hulse has been linked with a move away this summer but his agent Matt Buck insists he is fully focused on proving his worth in the top flight - a stance that recently saw him reject the chance of joining Millwall.
"There was an inquiry to QPR and there was an inquiry to Rob to see what his thoughts were on it," Buck told Press Association Sport.
"Basically he wants to go back pre-season and try to prove himself to the coaching staff and people at QPR that he warrants a place in the Premier League 25-man squad.
"And hopefully the Premier League matchday squad."
He added: "Rob is not even considering temporary moves at the moment.
"With Millwall if the situation changes we told them we would keep them in informed like anybody else.
"But his whole 100% focus is to get back, work hard in pre-season, work hard in the friendly games and prove he is worth that place."
Hulse penned a three-year deal with QPR when he joined from Derby last summer, but only made 12 starts in the second tier.

Maguire - 'exciting talent' says Clough.
    RAMS WRAP UP MAGUIRE SWOOP

Derby County have completed the signing of Chris Maguire after agreeing a compensation deal with Aberdeen for the striker.
Maguire was out of contract at Pittodrie, but the SPL club were entitled to compensation for the 22-year-old and had spent several weeks discussing a fee.
The Scotland international had turned down the offer of a new contract with Aberdeen in favour of testing himself in the Championship next season.
He has signed a three-year contract at Pride Park and he becomes Rams manager Nigel Clough's seventh capture of the summer.
"Chris is an exciting talent who has great potential to improve further," Clough told the club's official website.
"He is a creative player and someone who can bring a spark to the team.
"He's still young and will develop and improve, but having played in the Scottish Premier League and made his international debut he already has the quality to be competitive in our squad and team."

    Connor Wickham - Sunderland medical.
    WICKHAM SET FOR SUNDERLAND MEDICAL

Ipswich striker Connor Wickham is expected to undergo a medical with Sunderland within the next 24 hours.
Press Association Sport understands the Black Cats have moved swiftly after submitting a formal offer in excess of 8million for the 18-year-old and plan to carry out the checks as soon as possible.
In addition, Birmingham midfielder Craig Gardner is due on Wearside on Wednesday for talks with manager Steve Bruce hoping for a major double breakthrough.
Sunderland have made significant progress in the last 24 hours as they attempt to persuade England Under-21 international Wickham that his future lies at the Stadium of Light.
Liverpool's admiration of the teenager is well known, and it is understood Anfield would be his preferred destination, while Arsenal and Tottenham have also been mentioned in dispatches.
However, the Black Cats have thrown down to gauntlet by formalising their interest in the player, and it remains to be seen whether or not their proactive approach proves decisive.
Sunderland have no desire to be dragged into a bidding war for Wickham and will hope they have given themselves a head start.
Bruce has been on the Hereford-born youngster's trail for some time as he tries to bolster his attacking resources ahead of the new Barclays Premier League season.
He has 72 senior appearances for Town to his name, 35 of them as a substitute, and he scored nine times in last season's npower Championship.
Strikers are perhaps Bruce's main priority with Darren Bent having been sold to Aston Villa in January, Danny Welbeck now back with Manchester United following his loan spell and Fraizer Campbell facing most of the new campaign on the sidelines with a knee injury.
Indeed, Sunderland ended last season with record signing Asamoah Gyan as their only fit and available option in attack, and that is a situation the manager intends to address as a matter of urgency.
South Korea international Ji Dong-won has already been on Wearside to discuss terms, while the Black Cats held talks with Liverpool's David Ngog, initially as they negotiated Jordan Henderson's switch to Merseyside earlier this month.
But a successful swoop for a player whose potential has alerted a series of potential suitors would represent a signal of intent.
Meanwhile, Bruce is edging closer to a deal for 24-year-old Gardner, who was Birmingham's leading scorer last season.
Sunderland registered their interest in the player some time ago and have been working since to get their man.
They will hope to convince him of their ambition when he arrives in the north east on Wednesday and make a further breakthrough following the captures of free signings Keiren Westwood and Sebastian Larsson, who will officially join the club on Friday.

Wright-Phillips - wants Bolton move, says Knight.
SWP WANTS BOLTON MOVE - KNIGHT

Bolton defender Zat Knight claims Shaun Wright-Phillips is keen on a move to the Reebok Stadium.
Wright-Phillips started only two Barclays Premier League games for Manchester City last season and the midfielder came close to leaving the club in January.
A transfer to Wanderers would allow the 29-year-old England international to remain in the north west and Knight believes Wright-Phillips would be willing to take a pay cut to make it happen.
"I always talk to Shaun and he's a very good friend of mine. And speaking to him, he'd love to come to Bolton," said Knight, quoted in the Bolton News.
"He's at that age now where he needs to be playing first-team football week in, week out.
"I think he hasn't played regularly for the last two seasons. It's about playing football and then the rest will come.
"If he had to take a pay cut then I think he would do, because he could progress at Wanderers and then something else could happen.
"But he's a fantastic player and if people like that want to play here, then it shows how far the club has come."
