The transition to digital broadcasting has received a major boost in Poland, with the country’s parliament (Sejm) voting through a new law confirming the ASO date as July 31, 2013.

According to Wirtualne Media, the Sejm approved most of the 11 amendments suggested to the legislation earlier by the Polish Senate.

These include confirmation that publicly owned TVP and other broadcasters will operate the first multiplex and specifies fines they may be subjected to.

Significantly, the law also places a requirement for TVP and the country’s four main commercial broadcasters Polsat, TVN, Polskie Media and TV Puls to participate in a campaign on digitisation.

Poland’s second and third multiplexes were launched late last year, while its first multiplex, carry a mix of TVP and new commercial channels, is due to launch imminently.
