German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF will continue to show the Olympic Games on free-to-air television.
A rights contract was signed with the IOC covering the Winter Olympics in 2014 in Russia and the Summer Olympics in 2016 in Brazil. Financial details have not been disclosed.
"I am very happy that the Olympic Games will remain on public television," ARD's general director Monika Piel said in Cologne. "No other sports event offers such a huge variety of sports."
The broadcasters' boards still have to approve the rights deal.
