Flat-screen TV sets with an internet connection have become a standard feature in German living rooms: The turnover with connected TV sets will rise this year by around 44% to almost €3.5 billion, reports German industry association BITKOM.

Based on figures compiled by European Information Technology Observatory (EITO), BITKOM predicts that the number of hybrid TV sets sold will rise in parallel by around 60% to 3.4 million devices.

The market for connected TV sets will grow particularly fast in the UK and France. In both countries sales will roughly double this year: in the UK to around 2.1 million sets and in France to 1.6 million. In total, more than 10 million TV sets with integrated internet connection will be sold in the EU in 2011. In 2012, the amount will rise to more than 13 million sets, 4.3 million of them will be sold in Germany.

The turnover volume of the EU market for hybrid-TV sets will rise by 42% to around €10.4 billion this year. For 2012, a growth by one fifth to €12.2 billion is expected.

Most flat-screen TV sets from brand manufacturers with a screen size of at least 1 meter are already equipped with an internect connection. A growing number of smaller and less expensive models now also contain an internet interface.
