Swiss telco Swisscom has overtaken its competitor UPC Cablecom in the number of digital TV customers it serves.
Swisscom counted 512,000 customers for its IPTV platform Swisscom TV on 30 June 2011, while the country’s largest cable operator had only 509,600 digital TV customers.
In the year-by-year comparison, the number of Swisscom’s IPTV customers rose from 317,000 (30 June 2010) by 61.5% to 512,000. In Q2 2011 alone, 43,000 new customers were added. With the latest results, Swisscom has managed to become Switzerland’s market leader in digital television almost five years after its entry into the TV business.
Besides Swisscom, Swiss cable association Swisscable also announced its current figures. In total, the Swiss cable operator had 942,300 digital TV customers on 30 June 2011 - an increase of 39% in 12 months. 33% of the country’s 2.85 million cable households have now moved to digital TV, whereas one year ago the figure was 24%.
The number of cable customers who’ve signed up for broadband Internet grew by 7.4% to 822,600 while the number of telephone customers rose by 19% to 450,200.
