The worldwide IPTV market is poised to grow to $49 billion in service revenue, mainly driven by the engine of multiscreen video, according to new research from MRG.
There will be 113 million subscribers in 2015, the research revealed, with at least 25 IPTV operators with more than one million subscribers worldwide. Nine operators will have over three million subscribers.
The US will be successful in pockets, and account for a significant percentage - Verizon and AT&T will have over 7.5 million subscribers each - but otherwise there is negligible uptake per operator. Europe will have 12 IPTV operators with over one million each, and will remain ahead of Asia in 2015 in IPTV subscribers, due to continued regulatory confusion in the Asia-Pacific region. Eastern Europe will be a powerhouse, if Romania's 141% subscriber growth over the previous year is anything to set one's compass by.
Vendor revenue for IPTV products will increase to $4.8 billion in 2015, with set-top boxes representing about 60% of the pie.
MRG also found that the growth of IPTV market is in line with consumer demands for Wi-Fi in smart devices within homes. The market growth continues largely due to trends toward the mobile lifestyle habits of 18-55-year-olds, the firm said
