Germany's largest cable operator Kabel Deutschland has chosen US technology company Cisco for the expansion of its premium TV services to its 8.8 million customers.
The upgraded network will enable more HD and video-on-demand (VOD) services and lay the foundation for future offerings such as 3DTV channels and faster broadband speeds to meet the increasing consumer bandwidth requirements.
Even though Kabel Deutschland's customers can currently surf the net with a data rate of up to 100 Mbps based on DOCSIS 3.0 technology, the upgraded network will offer up to 1 Gbps.
As the backbone of the new services, Kabel Deutschland will deploy Cisco's ASR 9000 series routers to aggregate and distribute enhanced video, data and voice traffic throughout its converged IP-based Next-Generation Network (NGN).
