Fox International Channels (FIC) has launched tvN K-Pop Star Hunt, its first original entertainment programme produced in Asia.

The show, an Asian answer to the American Idol programme format, is co-produced by Fox, Korean broadcaster CJ Media, and entertainment production company Cube Entertainment.

TvN K-Pop Star Hunt will debut exclusively on Korea’s tvN channel Star World and Channel [V] International, and CJ Media’s TV platform in Korea at the end of December 2011. It began its first audition phase on 15 August, where fans of Korean pop between the ages of 11 to 29 in Hong Kong, the Philippines, Taiwan, Singapore and Thailand can enter the competition. The show will conclude with a live grand finale. K-pop artists will appear as mentors, judges, and performers.

FIC says it has become the first major pay-TV network in Asia to produce an original entertainment show in a talent hunt format.

“Audiences in the region crave entertainment content that was developed specifically for Asia, by Asia and in Asia,” said Joon Lee, senior vice president, content and communication and general manager, Korea ifor FIC.

FIC estimates tvN K-Pop Star Hunt will reach over 550 million people.
