3DTV roster, 3net has partnered to bring Red Bull's sports and culture events and athletes to U.S. television in 3D, including the Red Bull Rampage mountain biking contest.
Launched in 2001, the Rampage is run in the rugged, natural downhill terrain of remote Utah, which has been enhanced by manmade obstacles created over the course of a month and constructed to test the nerves of the world's best riders. Presenting it in 3D "brings the creative, unrestricted ethos of freeride mountain biking to the contest arena while staying true to the sport's core ideals," said the company in announcing the deal.
The Red Bull alliance will also yield original short-form 3D content developed around the US Open of Surfing, but no further details are yet available.
3net is a joint venture of Discovery, Sony and IMAX, and has a goal of providing the nation's first and only fully programmed, 24/7 3D network. It's currently available on DirecTV, and guarantees that it will feature an extensive library of 3D content by the end of 2011, featuring genres such as natural history, documentary, action/adventure, travel, history, hyper-reality, lifestyle and cuisine, concerts, movies, scripted series and more.
