German TV group ProSiebenSat.1 will launch an HbbTV-based multimedia service on its free-to-air general interest channel kabel eins on 1 September 2011.

The free-of-charge service, which will be accessible on the TV screen, will have features including an electronic programme guide (EPG) with preview clips on upcoming programme highlights, voting and a video area offering over 1,200 clips from kabel eins formats.

There will also be a weather application and a pathway to video-on-demand (VOD) library maxdome. The service will be gradually expanded, for example by adding recipes from the channel’s cookery shows.

After Sat.1 and ProSieben, kabel eins will be the third channel from the ProSiebenSat.1 family to get an HbbTV service. For reception, viewers will need an HbbTV-compliant hybrid flat-screen TV set or set-top-box with an internet connection.
