Australian public broadcaster SBS has launched a free video on demand (VOD) service, SBS On Demand.

The service will feature full episodes, clips and live streams of SBS content including documentaries, news and current affairs, drama, comedy, sport and entertainment.

More than 90% of SBS’s primetime TV content is available on the VOD service as well as a back catalogue of over 20,000 items including shows such as Go Back To Where You Came From, Immigration Nation and First Australians.

The UEFA Champions League, Tour de France, The World Game and Cycling Central will be streamed live on the site.

Users can share videos with friends via social media and those that sign up for an account are able to subscribe to a series and have new episodes added automatically to their playlists.

Michael Ebeid, SBS managing director, said: “SBS On Demand has been developed as more than just a regular catch-up service – it’s a real step forward in evolution – a sophisticated yet simple-to-use, true on-demand service providing our audiences with a more personal and flexible service – wherever and whenever they want.”

SBS On Demand joins the ranks of the VOD services of other Australian free-to-air channels, including ABC's iview and Seven's Plus7.
