LG Electronics has big plans for its 3D televisions as it aims to raise its market share for the devices fivefold this year by pushing its technology for lightweight, battery-free glasses.
According to Lee Kwan-sup, head of marketing for LG’s home entertainment unit, the company will probably reach 20% of the market for the devices by the end of this year, up from 4% at the beginning of the year.
The South Korean company aims to pass Samsung Electronics to become the world’s top seller of 3D televisions next year.
LG said around 70% of its new TVs will be equipped with 3D features by next year. It also plans to launch new TVs using organic LED technology starting next year.
“If we make a strong push into this newly developing premium segment, we can set a trend and establish an image as an innovator,” Lee said.
“This is a fortuitous cycle for us, and that’s why we’re really focusing on this 3D technology.”
