German public broadcaster ZDF has commenced offering its catch up TV service Mediathek for reception on mobile devices.
With the new app, viewers can watch selected full-length programmes of the main channel and digital sister services ZDFneo, ZDFkultur and ZDFinfo after their initial TV broadcast free of charge while on the go.
There are also highlight videos from shows as well as recommendations. Some programmes are provided as live-streams including the main evening news broadcasts "heute" and "heute-journal".
As the first step, the free-of-charge app is offered for devices operating with iOS (Apple) and Android (Google) including the iPhone and iPad. Further versions will follow.
Following its Mediathek, which has so far only been available on the internet and via HbbTV on connected TV sets, ZDF plans further apps, for example for its news portal heute.de and its sports and children's programmes
