Virgin Media has announced that it is trialling DOCSIS 3.0 technology from network technology giant Cisco to enhance speeds on its UK-wide cable TV network.

Using Cisco’s (3G60) Broadband Processing Engine, Virgin is testing new capability which can theoretically offer network speeds up to 1.5 Gbps. Indeed, the UK cableco claims that it achieved such speeds in a trial in East London by using a line card, designed to enable cable television operators to offer IP video services for Cisco’s flagship uBR10K Universal Broadband Router and Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS).

Commented Mark Palazzo, Cisco vice president and general manager, Cable Access Business Unit: “Cisco CMTS solutions are designed to support large-scale IP broadband and video services today – as well as the migration to IP networks in the near future. We are proud to help Virgin Media achieve such significant milestones with its network capacity and broadband connection speeds.”
