Qantas is to carry out a six-week trial in which it will stream in-flight entertainment wirelessly to tablet devices.

It hasn't yet confirmed which brand of tablet it will use, but the Apple iPad is among the models being considered.

The trial will take place on one of the airline's Boeing 767-300s, and the Q Streaming app will deliver TV shows, movies and music to passengers on the specially configured tablet.

Alison Webster, Qantas's customer experience manager, said: "We are very pleased to be the first airline in the world to trial this wireless streaming product... We see this as potentially being a breakthrough capability to be able to give more choice and more flexibility to customers' in-flight entertainment.”

Webster said the airline could eventually deliver all entertainment via wireless technology rather than seat-back screens. She said the plan was for passengers to eventually use their own devices to access streamed content, with a playback option to allow passengers who did not finish watching a programme on their own device before landing to complete their viewing, even after leaving the aircraft.
