Video streaming is the big story in mobile bandwidth consumption, and user-generated content is no exception. Huawei Global Mobile Broadband Forum hs found that more than a tenth of downloads from YouTube are made from mobile devices these days.
This usage accounts for a growing of mobile data bandwidth usage. YouTube overall totals 22% of mobile data.
Huawei Global Mobile Broadband Forum's figures were confirmed by Francisco Varela, director of Global Platform Partnerships at YouTube, who added that subscribers are using mobile handsets to create videos like never before. Two+ hours of video are uploaded from mobile devices every minute.
Varela also mentioned that, given the load that the service places on carrier networks that are already choked by exponentially growing data traffic, YouTube is working to optimize video consumption. It aims to do that on both the traffic and the device side, with plans to meet with operators and CE manufacturers alike.
Video made up 39% of mobile data usage in the first half of 2011, according to Allot Communications. YouTube takes the lion's share of that.
