German TV production company Spiegel TV is to launch its pay-TV channel Spiegel TV Wissen ("Spiegel TV Knowledge") on 4 October 2011.

Michael Grabowski, spokesman of the TV subsidiary of Hamburg-based publishing house Spiegel Verlag, confirmed the date to Rapid TV News.

"The content of the new channel will focus on knowledge and include topics taking a critical view at society as well as covering the genres science and technology, environment and nature," said Grabowski. The schedule will mainly comprise documentaries, reports and studio programmes.

Spiegel TV Wissen will replace the company's existing pay-TV channel Spiegel TV Digital. Compared with its predecessor, Spiegel TV Wissen will contain more original productions and will also be available as a high-definition simulcast, according to Grabowski.

The channel will be available on all platforms currently carrying Spiegel TV Digital, for example Kabel Deutschland, Kabel BW and Deutsche Telekom's Entertain.

On Unitymedia's cable network. the channel will be part of the HD line-up from 4 October 2011.
