4oD powers on as Channel 4 claims 21% VOD view lift
The latest iPlayer stats may have shown a fall in viewing during the summer but Channel 4 has bucked this trend with increased views on a sequential and yearly basis.
During August 2011, the 4oD video on demand (VOD) service registered 31 million long form VOD views across all platforms including channel4.com, YouTube, iPhone and iPad apps, PlayStation3, BT Vision, Virgin Media, and Talk Talk.
The core 4oD platform - 4oD on channel4.com - recorded an increase in activity in August with 3.6 million average monthly unique viewers, spending an average of 25.4 minutes viewing content.
The average hours viewed per month per unique user also increased from 1.8 million in July to 2 million in August. Comedy was the top genre with 9.5 million VOD views in August, whilst entertainment contributed 8.7 million. Drama series The Killing, received 5.3 million views alone.
Perhaps aided by the release of a feature film of the programme during the month, comedy The Inbetweeners drew 2.2 million views closely followed by soap opera Hollyoaks with 2.1 million views. E4 comedy drama series Beaver Falls pulled in 1.4 million VOD views.
