Red Bee Media has become the latest enabling technology provider for Liberty Global’s Horizon next-generation TV platform in a deal to supply rich metadata provider in launch territories.

In an exclusive multi-year deal with Liberty Global’s European cable division, UPC Broadband, the multi-platform media management technology provider will create and deliver rich metadata services including richer and deeper information to help customers to find their way around the range of content on the Horizon platform which is scheduled to launch in Q1 2012 in the Netherlands. Red Bee will also supply metadata for UPC’s existing digital TV platforms in the Netherlands, Ireland and Switzerland.

“Metadata is critical to the success of any TV platform, and Horizon is no exception. We are pleased to be working with Red Bee Media to deliver advanced metadata to our platforms”, said Andrew Kearney, Vice President TV Products of UPC Broadband.

“Digital television has radicalised the way we watch television and opened up new opportunities for broadcasters to promote and stream their content across multiple platforms. Within this picture, rich metadata is revolutionising the traditional listings model, accessing new audiences and potentially lucrative revenue streams,” added Bill Patrizio, CEO of Red Bee Media.
Horizon, which was launched at IBC 2011 by Liberty Global CEO Mike Fries, has been developed with a set of technology partners including Samsung, Intel, NDS, Nagravision, IOKO and Empathy Labs.
