In a further part of its campaign to up its game and further commercialise its mammoth online video estate, YouTube has launched a new UK online movie service.
Featuring over a thousand full-length feature films from major Hollywood and British studios available for rent in the UK at youtube.com/movies, the new service mirrors similar offerings in the US and Canada.
Content will include blockbusters such as The Dark Knight and Reservoir Dogs plus Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Hanna, Fast Five, and Red Riding Hood. A large number of the pages on the service will also feature YouTube Movie Extras with free behind-the-scenes videos, cast interviews, parodies, clips and remixes from YouTube’s unique community of content creators. Over time YouTube will be adding videos and features to YouTube Movie Extras.
As an indication of the influence of YouTube on the online video industry, the most recent data from the comScore Video Metrix service showed that YouTube partner channel users accounted for 155 million of the 180 million US Internet users watching online video content in August 2011. This was based on online video content viewing and did not include user-generated content.
