German commercial broadcaster VOX will provide subtitles for hearing impaired people from November 2011: Viewers will be able to optionally watch Thursday night's prime-time movie at 20.15 CET with text captions.
Kick-off will be with US blockbuster "Night at the Museum" on 3 November 2011 followed by "Transporter 2", "The Duchess" and "The Bourne Supremacy" in the forthcoming weeks. Selected movies on public holidays at 20.15 CET will also be offered with subtitles.
Sister channel RTL has been offering a subtitling service for selected movies since December 2010. The captions can be accessed by all digital TV households via cable, satellite and DTT by pressing the subtitle button on their remote control.
