A Libyan TV report that Muammar Gaddafi has been killed by revolutionaries following the fall of Sirte has been confirmed by Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril of the National Transitional Council (NTC).
The former leader of Libya was reportedly captured in district 2 of Sirte brandishing a golden pistol, and his body was taken in an ambulance to the city of Misrata earlier today (20 October). His body is now in a mosque, according to the NTC.
Libyan TV reports suggest he died from gunshot wounds sustained in his capture, with graphic images broadcast by Al Jazeera and the BBC adding gravitas to the news.
Prior to the confirmation from Prime Minister Jibril, Al Jazeera reported that Abdel Majid, a field commander of the NTC, has confirmed to the network that Gaddafi was captured and wounded.
The news from North Africa is dominating the headlines of both regional and international news broadcasters, while Libya rejoices the end of Gaddafi's 42 year rule with mass street celebrations.
