Spanish Mediapro's laSexta has been talking positively about its forthcoming merger with Grupo Planeta's Antena 3. However laSexta's CEO José Miguel Contreras recently confirmed his company has not yet reached any agreement with Antena 3. "Interesting things are happening in this process, although the merger is difficult for the moment," he said. Market sources are confident the merger will happen before the end of the year.
With laSexta taken by Antena 3 and Prisa's Cuatro absorbed by Mediaset's Telecinco, Spain will only have two big national private TV companies strongly competing and getting the biggest piece of the advertising cake since national public broadcaster TVE does not have any kind of commercial advertising.
However the PP party (the opposition party to the government) has proposed in its next national elections programme that TVE should go back to include commercial ads on its programming in order to cut down on its high deficit.
